I chose a job in the financial markets because of the unpredictable nature of the industry, and because I wanted excitement. Although now in my current position?in which I get several job offers every year from competing companies?I actually performed rather poorly for the first three years. At the time, however, I had a supportive boss who would encourage me, saying, “Never mind; just do the job to the best of your ability.” Without those words I doubt that I would have continued, much less succeeded, and that is why I always try to encourage my junior staff.
