Q&A

Arifumi Yoshida

Job Description : Research Analyst
Business : Citi Investment Research & Analysis
Year of Entry : 2003

Could you briefly tell us a bit about your work?
I am a sector analyst covering the automotive parts business. I regularly visit auto parts companies and factories, not only in Japan but also in China, the U.S. and elsewhere. As an analyst, it is very important to gather information first hand. If you don’t actually head out to the location and see the cars and parts for yourself, then you can’t give a correct analysis; you can’t assess the real value of a company purely by crunching numbers from a balance sheet.
What is the most important ability to have as an analyst?
I think the key attribute required for this job is curiosity. You can’t work as an analyst if you don’t have the feeling of always wanting to know more; the job requires you to be completely immersed in the sector you specialize in. Investors rate us by the reports we write, and what they value is solid sector information and analysis; that is why we have to provide the best possible information based on a deep foundation of industry knowledge.
Why do you think students aspiring to be analysts should choose Citigroup Global Markets Japan?
The training system for new employees includes weekly lectures on the theory and practice of our work, and training seminars at overseas branches?it’s really well structured. There’s a basis here that allows young employees to gain the skills they need while working in friendly competition with each other. This company has a real commitment to fostering people’s abilities and talents right from the start. For someone starting out as an analyst, I think it’s the perfect environment.
