Job Description : Equities
Business : Sales & Trading Middle Office
Year of Entry : 2006
Could you tell us a bit about the work you do in the middle office?
Our role is act as a coordinator between the front and back offices to ensure the accurate and efficient processing of trades in Japanese equity products. During the market hours, we open new client accounts, liaise with customers regarding transactions and other issues and participate in a variety of system projects. After the market closes, our main task is to ensure that client transactions are correctly booked and allocated, and to prepare and send trade confirmations to clients. Middle Office is responsible for providing the necessary support to ensure that each trade is processed smoothly from the execution of the trade to its ultimate settlement.
What do you notice as you are doing your job?
This is a job that requires both accuracy and efficiency. There is no room for error in the confirmations, which also have to been sent within a limited period of time. Since we are in constant contact with clients based both in Japan and outside of Japan, and also with Citi offices overseas, I am very aware of the importance of communication styles. The same message may be interpreted in different ways depending on the manner it is communicated, therefore I think carefully and try to speak in the most appropriate manner.
Do you have any advice for students who are job-hunting?
When job-hunting, I think it’s really important to visit a lot of companies so that you can form your own impression of each one and think about whether it would suit you or not. You should imagine yourself actually working there, listen carefully to what employees of the company say and ask plenty of questions. I went to presentations by seventy different companies and finally I chose Citigroup Global Markets Japan. The employees I met at the interview and seminars were very impressive, and I was particularly impressed by the commitment and pride they showed as they told me about their work. From the moment I started work here, I knew that I had made the right choice.
