Job Description : Credit Products
Business : Global Markets
Year of Entry : 2003
Could you briefly tell us about your job?
Structured credit is a class of financial products based on the use of financial technology to restructure credit assets (for example existing securities, loans, credit default swaps [CDS], and other instruments with underlying credit, such as securitized products) into new products. Until the spring of 2007, I was involved in structuring these products at Citi in New York. Since my return to Japan, my role has mainly been to take structured credit products developed in New York and London and market them to investors here.
What are the advantages of working at Citigroup Global Markets Japan?
In October 2005, I transferred to Citi in New York at my own request. At the time I only had two years of work experience, so I think the fact that I was allowed to go in spite of this was due to the company’s policy of actively fostering young employees. For about a year and a half, I was able to work on the Citi product structuring team, which was a really valuable experience. If you take initiative in your work you can grasp major opportunities like this?which is one important advantage of working at Citigroup Global Markets Japan.
What do you think is necessary to work as a trader or in sales?
A trader must have the strength of mind to take risks, using a combination of calmness under pressure, accurate judgment, decisiveness, and luck. In sales, while you need to be a good listener, you must also have the adaptability and responsiveness to persuade investors and actually close the deal (or get the trade done). Both jobs demand physical and psychological toughness. Needless to say, you won’t last if you aren’t passionate about the job.
What is your message to students who want to work in this company?
I’d like to work with people who can keep a strong sense of professionalism as well as displaying a balance of calmness under fire and passion for what they do, both as individuals and as business people.
