Q&A

Alex Miller

Job Description : Equity Sales
Business : Investor Sales
Year of Entry : 2002

What made you decide to work at Citigroup Global Markets Japan in Japan?
I majored in Japanese at Oxford University in the U.K., and was always keen to work in Japan. After joining Citigroup in London in 2002 with the ultimate aim of working in the Tokyo office, I gained experience in the U.S. equities team in London. Then I transferred to Citigroup Global Markets Japan in 2006.
Could you tell us briefly about your job?
I work in Equity Sales. My job is to provide investors with relevant information and services so that they can get the best performance from their portfolios. Here in the Tokyo office, I am doing things that I like to do: talking to people, trying to make sense of the world, and working out how to help our clients make money in the market.
Do you have any advice for students who are job-hunting?
When I graduated I never once thought, ‘I want to do job X’ or ‘I want to become a Y.’ My thinking was always, ‘What am I good at? What do I enjoy?’ So I looked for careers that could offer me that, and was lucky enough to find a great environment in Citi. I think students should think carefully about their plans and keep a strong sense of direction as they go about their job-hunt.
How about the lifestyle in Japan?are you enjoying it?
It is great to be living in Japan. It’s a big, important global market and there is tremendous energy here. The lifestyle in Japan?particularly Tokyo?compares well with anywhere. I play futsal in a trading floor team, train in martial arts, and can socialize as much or as little as I want to. It’s surprisingly easy to get into the countryside to golf or go to the beach, and there is a steady stream of clients visiting Japan that I enjoy showing around.
