A Day in the Life

Justin Dhingra

Job Description : Structured Products
Business : Global Markets
Year of Entry : 2006

6:30 Wake up and read the WSJ, FT,
and Nikkei on the PC while eating breakfast.
7:30 Arrive at work,
read up on emails from overnight. We see all the email flows from the Global team; it’s very helpful to see what other regions are doing and what types of products are selling globally. It also inspires me to think of new product ideas.
8:30 Update prices and terms of existing products for client and various sales staff in both Fixed Income and Equities.
11:30 Two or three times a week, I have lunch outside the office.
Otherwise, I eat at my desk. My favorite food for lunch is katsu-don.
12:30 Work on new product ideas.
I gather intelligence by talking to sales people. When coming up with product ideas, it’s important to know what the client needs and what products are hot in the market. I work on the pricing at this stage. It can get quite quantitative and my technical background comes in handy here. After we’re happy with the idea and pricing, the marketing starts. Marketing involves making presentation materials for the client, seeing the client with the salesperson to discuss a product and following up proactively on the status of a deal.
19:30 After a long day of work, I treat myself by going to the gym.
Working in the finance industry can be intense and taking care of your body is very important.
At times, we have visitors from London and New York and tend to go out to dinner on those nights.
21:00 Arrive home.
Catch up on email with friends back in the States. Read Japanese books and magazines to improve my Japanese.
