[ The text begins. ]
Global Banking is a team-oriented division. Our job responsibilities require speedy decision making and the ability to adapt every day to new challenges.
The Global Banking Division has two job categories: Financial Analyst (new graduates) and Associate (postgraduates or MBA and other masters, JDs and PhDs with working experience). As these two categories require different job responsibilities and qualities, we provide separate training programs for each.
Your responsibilities as a financial analyst vary day to day, ranging from developing a complicated financial model under tight deadlines to researching company data in a library or attending all-day meetings with a client.
The pace and workload vary as well. As we emphasize teamwork, we will assign you substantial responsibility and expect that you make a significant contribution to your team.
Your responsibilities are likely to be highly analytical, such as creating financial models or analyzing information. These include:
The Financial Analyst Program begins in April with the Training Program in Tokyo. It starts with orientation and induction sessions designed to provide you with an overview of Citigroup Global Markets Japan and the role and function of each division. These sessions include lessons to obtain basic knowledge for your jobs such as finance and accounting. You will be rotated through each department. This is followed by an four-week intensive classroom-based training program in New York, beginning in July. You will join other new recruits to the Global Banking and Capital Markets Divisions from all over the world. The program will be conducted by skilled instructors drawn from within Citi and from among external corporate training consultants.
This comprehensive program is designed to cover the following fundamental roles of financial analysts:
Our training program is designed to include balanced and efficient classroom style learning and interactive practice. To ensure that you can perform finance, valuation and business modeling efficiently, we will also provide a complementary training program to hone your computer and information-gathering skills. You can thus apply the knowledge and experience acquired in the program to actual business operations.
Our financial analysts are allocated to either the Industry Coverage Teams or Product group. Occasionally, however, you may be requested to work with other industry or product groups, depending on business needs, where you will be able to broaden your business experience through dealing with bankers in a variety of groups in several sectors.
We seek candidates with graduate or postgraduate degrees in a wide variety of majors. Applicants are expected to show superior academic performance, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, solid quantitative ability and a high degree of self-motivation.
Key attributes of a qualified candidate as financial analyst are:
During the first year, Associates will work closely with Managing Directors, Directors, Vice Presidents, Senior Associates and Financial Analysts on all assignments.
You will start contacting clients as soon as possible and are expected to obtain the client management skills to maintain our competitive edge. As a member of a small working team, you may also be assigned successively to highly responsible tasks.
In their second year, Associates will assume greater responsibility and contact clients more frequently. You will be able to build an advanced business career by handling client management tasks at an early stage.
New Associates will attend an six-week training program in New York, recognized as the most comprehensive in the industry. During the course, you will learn about Citigroup and a broad range of areas such as securities analysis, capital markets, M&A, risk management and regulations.
We stress this opportunity to get to know colleagues from around the world during the course. The relationships with those colleagues will help you improve your ability to handle quality business projects when you are back in Tokyo.
We also have an in-house program called the Mentor Program. Your mentor will provide you with medium-term guidance.
After you have completed the training programs, we will assign you to a specific team within the Global Banking Division. The decision regarding your assignment will be made according to your interests, skills, personality, career plan, and our specific business needs.
The Division is divided into the Industry Coverage Teams and the Product Group, and each group is composed of several groups categorized by clients (sectors) and products.
1. General Industries Group
2. Financial Institutions
3. Financial Entrepreneurs
1. M&A Group
2. ECM (Equity Capital Markets)
3. DCM (Debt Capital Markets)
Associates are allocated either to the Industry Coverage Teams or Product group and are expected to play key roles in the group’s proposal activities, project execution and so forth. Occasionally you may be requested to work with other Industry Coverage Teams or Product groups, depending on business needs. This will help you broaden your business experience through dealing with bankers in a variety of groups and sectors.
We seek candidates with distinguished academic achievement in a variety of fields. In addition to MBA graduates, we welcome other master degree graduates and PhDs with working experience. We are not looking for specific types of people but consider individuality a key factor in choosing a candidate. The fact that our Associates have diverse talents and backgrounds is evidence of this policy.
